Alstom has unveiled its latest generation of the Coradia regional train known as ‘Coradia Stream’, which is a low-floor electric multiple unit developed for regional and intercity transport services across the European market.

Netherlands-based national railway operator NS and Italian rail company Trenitalia are scheduled to be the first customers to purchase two customised versions of the new trains.

Alstom Regional & Intercity trains vice-president Wolfram Schwab said: “We are very proud to present today in two different European countries two versions of this train, for intercity transport in the Netherlands and for regional traffic in Italy.

“With its improved modularity, new passenger experience and weight savings, Coradia Stream opens a new chapter in the commercial success story of the Coradia regional range spanning more than 30 years.”

Coradia Stream has been designed by an international team and developed as part of a partnership between Alstom’s sites in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Poland.

NS initially placed an order for 79 Coradia Stream trains in July last year.

The new trains are expected to enter commercial service in 2021 and will operate on the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Breda line and on the Den Haag-Eindhoven corridor at a maximum speed of 200km/h.

The units are equipped with ATB and ERTMS systems and can run on 25KV AC (high-speed line) and 1.5KV DC (main railway network) power.

Trenitalia signed a contract for 150 Coradia Stream trains in August last year.

The trains are set to be branded 'Pop' by the Italian operator and feature an interactive configurator that allows the customisation of the units according to the suitability of the operating region.

The solution features multiple configurations and capacity requirements necessary for regional and suburban transport.

Alstom is expected to start delivering the first batch of 47 trains in early 2019 under the deal.
