Pan-European passenger transport company Arriva has won an eight-year contract valued at €550m to run the Pågatågen train services in Sweden up to December 2026.

The transport authority of the Skåne region awarded the contract to Arriva via a competitive tender process.

Arriva has been operating the rail services in this region since 2007 and had already secured a two-year extension on its franchise through to 2018 prior to the latest award.

Arriva will also assume responsibility for fleet maintenance and the introduction of new trains into service as part of the deal.

The number of trains operating in the region is expected to increase to 99 trains from the current 66, thereby providing a greater number of service connections.

Arriva also noted it is set to develop a new digital mobility portal known as ‘Arriva Tågportal’, which will allow better coordination of services and improve the delivery of passenger information.

The company operates and manages 900 buses, 150 trains and 90 tram cars in Sweden, and currently employs around 3,900 staff.
