Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi has issued operational authorisation for the Siemens-manufactured Vectron alternating-current (AC) locomotive.
The vehicles are set to be operated by the state-owned Finnish rail company VR Group.
The first eight Vectrons are able enter into commercial service immediately following the approval.
Siemens won a deal in February 2014 to deliver a total of 80 locomotives to the VR Group by the end of 2026, and the contract also includes an option for a further 97 locomotives. The agreement forms the first broad-gauge configuration order for Vectron.
Five locomotives have been undergoing various type tests for testing and certification according to the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) since early 2016.
Several additional functionalities and equipment packages were also certified as part of the tests, including the broad-gauge bogies, a special winter package and the two diesel power modules, which will connect short stretches without the need for overhead powerlines.
