The City of Calgary Administration has recommended an extension of the C$4.65bn ($3.38bn) Stage 1 of construction for the Green Line light rail transit (LRT) in Canada.
The extension will be built from 16 Avenue N (Crescent Heights) to 126 Avenue SE (Shepard).
Green line is scheduled to open in 2026, with subsequent extensions to be added after securing further funding.
City of Calgary transportation general manager Mac Logan said: “Building the core of the Green Line LRT is essential to supporting Calgary’s growth.
“We have a unique opportunity now to apply for a significant amount of funding. In building the most technically complex piece of the project first, we will be well positioned to expand the line in affordable, incremental pieces as more funding becomes available.”
Stage 1 of the Green Line will carry 60,000 people across a 20km distance comprising a total of 14 stations, and will connect major activity centres such as Quarry Park, including recreation centres, parks, and libraries.

By GlobalDataLogan added: “Stage 1 of the Green Line will directly benefit Calgarians along the line and will support the city’s entire transportation network, by taking cars off the road and balancing demand on the busy Red and Blue LRT lines.”
Stage 1 is expected to create more than 12,000 jobs during the construction phase, and a further 400 long-term jobs once operational.
The provincial and federal governments have already provided support to the Green Line LRT project.
