Greater Anglia’s first refurbished Class-170 trains are set to re-enter passenger service in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, UK.
The trains will now feature more seats and plug points. Arriva Traincare carried out the upgrade work at its facility in Crewe under contract to Porterbrook Leasing.

Greater Anglia customer service director Andrew Goodrum said: “As part of the new nine-year franchise, we will replace our entire fleet of trains with 1,043 brand new carriages, but in the meantime, I’m delighted that the refurbishment of our fleet of Class-170 trains will provide improved comfort and a better travelling experience for our customers.”
As part of the works, Porterbrook will invest £5m to upgrade Greater Anglia’s eight three-carriage and four two-carriage trains. These trains will operate on the Norwich to Cambridge, Ipswich to Cambridge, Ipswich to Lowestoft and Norwich to Lowestoft routes.
Each three-carriage train will also be fitted with six more seats.
The company noted that 170 270 is the first train to receive a complete upgrade and feature new plug sockets, refurbished seats with new cushions, backs and covers, new carpets.

By GlobalDataOther upgrades include new flooring in the toilets, refurbished heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, new wall panels, repainted vestibules, grab handles and hand rails, a deep-clean throughout and painted in Greater Anglia colours.
The project is set for completion early next year.
