Russian Railways (RZD) is to start a new Moscow to Berlin service using variable gauge Talgo trainsets from December.
Patentes Talgo in Spain is manufacturing the carriages for the train.
The new international train will operate under the brand name Strizh and depart on its first run from Moscow’s Kursk Station.
This new passenger train will comprise carriages that are equipped with a system for automatically changing the width of wheel sets.
Because of this, the time required will be reduced for converting the carriages from the Russian standard gauge line of 1,520mm to the narrow-gauge European track of 1,435mm.
The Strizh will cut travel time from Moscow to Berlin by four hours.
