Swedish train haulage provider Hector Rail has signed an agreement with German company Siemens for the delivery of five new electric Vectron locomotives.
The agreement also has provision for a further 15 locomotives, valid until 2021.
Designed for the Scandinavian market, the electric train features an extra mile function, which means they are equipped with a diesel engine and radio control. This feature facilitates efficient shunting in and out of terminals without the need for access to a separate shunting vehicle.
The new Vectron locomotives are also deployed with a European Train Control System (ETCS).
Two of the five Hector Rail locomotives have already been developed and are expected for delivery this year, while the remaining three will be delivered next year. However, the initial two are implemented with conventional safety systems instead of the new ETCS and will also be delivered without the extra mile functionality.
When braking, the Vectron locomotives have the capability to re-generate electricity to the power grid and can haul heavier trains than previous generations, allowing more payload to be moved in a train.
