The European Railway Agency (ERA) has granted the EN 45-545 European Fire and Smoke certification for Axalta Coating Systems‘ Alesta range of powder coatings.
Completely replacing national standards by next year, the new European standard aims to guarantee regulation harmonisation and offer a high level of safety for European rail travel.
In order to gain EN 45-545 fire and smoke certification, the Alesta powder coating range was thoroughly and independently tested over several months. They are used internally and externally on rolling stock throughout Europe.
Axalta EMEA powder business marketing communications manager Markus Koenigs said: "Our products are usually developed to enhance the beauty of objects in some way, but it is very important to know that they may also contribute to the safety of passengers and staff in the very unlikely event of a fire.
"Strict safety guidelines, like EN 45-545, are certainly welcomed by Axalta."
The company noted that Alesta is also available for rail stock in North America and they are also being used on rail vehicles parts.
