Bombardier Transportation has received approval in Austria to operate its Traxx AC3 Last Mile Locomotive in the entire DACH region, comprising Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The Traxx AC Last Mile locomotive features a new support diesel engine accompanied by a traction battery and remote control for shunting.

These systems collectively allow the electric locomotive to efficiently bridge sections of non-electrified track with seamless transition from electric to diesel operation and vice versa.
This ability of the locomotive will be mainly useful in places such as ports, terminals, depots or factories where a supporting diesel shunting locomotive is often called in to help trains cross the final, non-electrified, track sections called the ‘last mile’.
Bombardier Transportation Austria managing director Christian Diewald said: "Approval in Austria is another very important milestone for further implementing of Traxx AC3 Last Mile locomotives in Central Europe, but also in Austria itself.
"It is the only locomotive, which has already proven its strong performance in last mile operation during many successful test runs in Austria, as well as in commercial operation in Switzerland, now it is ready for revenue service in Austria."

By GlobalDataBombardier noted that the Traxx’s ability to operate on catenary power, wherever possible, and to use its support diesel engine only where necessary makes it efficient, economical and environmentally friendly.
The company has currently received more than 240 orders for diverse Traxx AC3 locomotive variants and sold about 2,000 units of the Traxx locomotive platform.
Last November, Bombardier secured a $82m order from German leasing company Railpool to deliver 18 Traxx Multi-System (MS) and Traxx AC last mile locomotives.
The new locomotives will increase Railpool’s fleet to a total of 183 vehicles, 169 of which are Traxx locomotives.
The order comprises 13 MS units and five AC last mile locomotives, which will be deployed in Scandinavia for services in Sweden and Norway.
