German private railway company Lokomotion has placed an order with Siemens for eight Vectron type locomotives to be operated in Germany, Austria and Italy.

In addition to the train protection systems required for these countries, the new locomotives will also be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS).

The 200km/h multi-system Vectron locomotives will have a maximum power output of 6.4MW and the delivery of the vehicles is scheduled to start early next year.

"With this order, our Vectron platform has reached two significant milestones at the same time."

The new locomotives are to be deployed in cross-border traffic between Germany and Italy.

Siemens mobility division CEO Jochen Eickholt said: "With this order, our Vectron platform has reached two significant milestones at the same time.

"Firstly, Lokomotion is the 20th customer who has decided in favour of our locomotive. And, secondly, this order also marks the 300th Vectron we have sold."

Vectron was developed based on information from interviews with many different operators, and on experience gained from more than 1,600 Eurosprinters and Eurorunners in operation.

The new Vectron offers traction in four different versions such as AC, DC, MS and DE.

Last April, Siemens delivered the first Vectron locomotive built for a broad gauge rail in Helsinki, Finland.

This advanced locomotive has been brought to Finland for testing purposes and is equipped with instrumented wheelsets to deliver operating data to technicians.

Last November, Germany-based Unicredit Leasing awarded a contract to Siemens for the delivery of eight Vectron DC type locomotives.

Unicredit will lease the new electric locomotives with DB Schenker Rail freight operator in Italy.

Featuring a maximum power of 5,200kW and are capable of travelling up to 160km/h, the vehicles will enter into service later this year.
