A Korean-Filipino Consortium has secured a PHP3.8bn ($80m) contract from the Philippines Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to carry out the maintenance of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) system.
The consortium is comprised Busan Transportation, Edison Development & Construction, Tramat Mercantile, TMICorp and Castan.
Under the deal, the consortium will undertake maintenance works of the rolling stock and signalling system.
There are currently 12 qualified technical experts, including rolling stock, signalling, and track specialists, from Busan carrying out the necessary activities for transition and system assessment.
DOTC secretary Jun Abaya said: "We are one step closer to having a safer and more reliable MRT-3 system with our new world-class rail maintenance service provider.
"With the operator of the Busan railway network in South Korea sharing their technical expertise, the riding public can expect an increase in the number of running trains and the efficiency of operations."

By GlobalDataApart from fulfilling maintenance requirements, the contract also covers the general overhaul of 43 coaches over the course of the agreement period, and the total replacement of the signalling system within 24 months.
The Philippine Government attempted to bid out the contract in September 2014 and last January, but failed as no company made any bid.
This situation prompted the DOTC to resort to an alternative mode of procurement in line with the Government Procurement Reform Act of 2003, to be able to speed up the process.
After the Philippines’ Government Procurement Policy Board (GPPB) unanimously approved, the government invited several companies to make an offer for the maintenance contract but under a negotiated deal, including SMRT International, Hamburg-Consult, Korea Railroad, Busan Transportation and Schunk Bahn-und Industrietechnik and Comm Builders & Technology Joint Venture.
