US national rail company Amtrak has introduced a cellular-based Wi-Fi service to all Auto Train passengers as part of an ongoing effort to improve their travelling experience.
Auto Train is a 1,376km-long scheduled train service between Washington DC and Florida to transport passengers and their automobiles including cars, vans, SUVs and motorcycles.

It is the first long-distance train to provide free Wi-Fi via AmtrakConnect, which uses multiple cellular carriers to provide the best mobile experience possible, taking advantage of 4G LTE technologies where available.
This is the first phase of a larger Amtrak rollout that will provide passengers with free Wi-Fi on all single-level, long-distance train routes next year.
Amtrak Long Distance senior vice-president and general manager Mark Murphy said: "This new amenity marks an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving the passenger experience.
"The availability of Wi-Fi provides the connectivity passengers expect while travelling and demonstrates yet another reason why Amtrak is a smarter way to travel."

The company noted that data-intensive activities such as streaming video and music, and downloading large files will be restricted in order to provide a better onboard internet experience for its passengers.
