Hong Kong metro operator MTR’s subsidiary MTR Stockholm (MTRS) has received a six-year extension of concession agreement from Sweden’s Stockholm County Council to operate the Stockholm Metro.
MTRS has been operating the Stockholm Metro since 2009 under an eight-year contract, and has now been given the approval to continue operating the metro from 2017 to 2023.

The 110km rail network with 100 stations carries an average of 1.2 million passengers on weekdays.
Stockholm public transport agency SL chairman Kristoffer Tamsons said: "We look forward to working closely with MTR as we introduce new trains and advanced signalling and further expand the railway network in the coming years."
Apart from Stockholm Metro, MTR also operates intercity train services in Sweden between the key east and west coast cities of Stockholm and Gothenburg under a separate wholly owned subsidiary company, MTR Express (Sweden).

In March, MTR Express had launched a new commercial service on the 455km-long rail route between Stockholm and Göteborg in Sweden.
MTR Express will run a fleet of brand new energy-efficient, Swiss-built trains designed for Nordic weather conditions.
Additionally, MTR’s first European open-access venture will offer a range of enhanced customer services including ergonomically designed first-class seating throughout the trains and an online 24h booking service with seat selection.
