Vossloh Kiepe and Vossloh Rail Vehicles has secured a contract from Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachen (VMS) to deliver four additional City Link tram-trains for use in the Chemnitz area, Germany.

VMS had placed an initial order in 2012 for eight tram-trains for the first stage of the network, which includes lines from Chemnitz to Burgstädt, Hainichen and Mittweida.

The bi-mode hybrid vehicles will operate less than 600V/750V DC overhead voltage on tram lines in the city centre and in diesel mode on heavy-rail lines.

The Citylink vehicles have two powerpacks fitted to the roof, which consist of a diesel engine and a generator.

"The new Citylink vehicles will be specially adapted to the city’s infrastructure and the regional tracks on which they will be operated."

Similar to the eight tram-trains already ordered, the new Citylink vehicles will be specially adapted to the city’s infrastructure and the regional tracks on which they will be operated.

The doors of these vehicles have a ramp system, which ensures that access is hazard-free despite the different platform heights.

The Citylinks have reliable and new electric technology in the Vossloh Kiepe traction kit and the drive system on these vehicles is equipped with four IGBT direct pulse inverters.

In order to comply with the stringent redundancy requirements, each of the four DC asynchronous motors has its own converter.

The two drive bogies are equipped with a total motor power of 550kW, which provides good acceleration and service brake delay values.

The conventional bogies with wheelset axles, developed and built by Vossloh Rail Vehicles, have a secondary air suspension system for improved passenger comfort.

In this order, Vossloh Kiepe supplies the complete drive technology and vehicle control system, on-board power, HVAC equipment for passenger and driver compartments, safety and passenger information systems, as well as the video monitoring system.
