Swiss power and automation technology firm ABB has secured a $90m order from Stadler Rail to provide sustainable high-speed, suburban and urban transit in Europe and in the US.

Under the deal, ABB’s traction converters with integrated power supplies, traction transformers and battery chargers will be equipped on new international EuroCity trains being manufactured by Stadler Rail.

The new EuroCity trains are being built for the Swiss Federal Railways to speed passenger service starting in 2017 between cities, including Frankfurt, Zurich and Milan.

"The new EuroCity trains are being built for the Swiss Federal Railways to speed passenger service starting in 2017 between cities, including Frankfurt, Zurich and Milan."

The ABB-equipped Stadler trains, which will be operated between Zurich and Milan, and later between Frankfurt and Milan, will be the world’s first single-decker, low-floor, electric high-speed trains on a line that runs on both alternating and direct current electrification systems.

According to ABB, its propulsion system will be located beneath the floor of the train, taking up less space and adding more comfort for the passengers.

Four new diesel-electric railcars for Capital Metro in Austin, Texas, US, will also be equipped with ABB’s compact traction converters with integrated power supplies.

The deal will also see 15 Stadler electric trains, which are slated for Hungarian National Railways’ suburban fleet, powered with ABB’s compact traction converters and transformers.

Stadler Rail and ABB have been working together since 2002 and ABB traction equipment has been ordered for more than 1,500 regional trains and more than 350 light-rail vehicles.

ABB’s traction technology is already successfully deployed in Stadler’s existing fleet for Capitol Metro.

The company has also provided equipment for Stadler trains in the US, including for the Denton County Transportation Authority, as well as for a recent order from California’s Bay Area Rapid Transit.
