In 2010, Baku Metro announced a 20-year phase-gate development programme aimed to develop 53 new stations and an 84.3km network by 2030.

As part of this project, a total of 1,100 metro cars are to be replaced by 2028 and further trains will be purchased to run on the new lines, Alstom stated.

The new metro cars have been produced at Transmashholding’s (TMH) Metrovagonmash plant, located near Moscow, Russia.

Alstom and TMH have created four joint ventures in Russia and Kazakhstan so far, to carry out projects for the 1,520mm gauge market.
