L&T Construction’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure Business unit has received a $740m contract from Qatar Rail to design and build the Gold Line of the Doha Metro project in Qatar.
The contract was awarded to L&T along with its joint-venture (JV) partners Aktor in Greece, Yapi Merkezi Insaat and STFA Group of Turkey, and Qatar’s Al Jaber Engineering.

The order forms part of the total $3.3bn deal awarded to the JV and the project is scheduled to be completed in 54 months.
As part of the contract, the JV will design and construct twin tunnels for an approximate length of 11km, as well as nine underground metro stations.
Other tasks under the contract include architectural finishes and mechanical, electrical and plumbing works.
L&T infrastructure and construction board member and senior executive vice-president SN Subrahmanyan said: "This order, close on the heels of the Riyadh Metro order, has been won in the face of stiff global competition and reflects the growing confidence of clients in L&T’s capability to handle mega projects in the Middle East.

As per the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Doha Metro is a key infrastructure project that is anticipated to be carried out with a complete budget of around €20bn and will create over 1,000 jobs.
Construction of the entire Doha Metro network will be carried out in phases, and will have four lines with 98 stations over a total length of 300km. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
