London Bridge railway station’s first phase of redevelopment is set to near completion as per schedule on 31 March, as part of the UK Government-sponsored £6.5bn Thameslink Programme.

The first two new platforms will enter into service, while the other two stations will remain closed for rebuild.

Thameslink Programme is intended to transform the current layout of the station and create a platform with new tracks that can operate larger and spacious trains similar to tube services to offer passengers more travel options to new destinations.

By 2018, the programme aims to lower pressure on the London Underground and run trains every two-three minutes during peak times through central London.

UK rail minister Stephen Hammond said: "Thameslink is vital if we are to deliver a transport network fit for the 21st century, providing more seats across the morning peak and better connections across the south-east.

On completion of the redevelopment, London Bridge station will feature a new single large concourse to provide more space and easier connections to other rail services and the Underground.

Additionally, it will link the two communities to the north and south of the station while boosting economic regeneration in the area.
