Engineering company Klas Telecom’s TRX Connected Transportation Platform has been selected by Project Superfast Wi-Fi In-Carriage for Future Travel (SWIFT) in the UK.
The platform has been selected to provide the on-board communications gateway / server, switching and software-defined wide-area network (SDWAN) technology for the initial phase of the project, which is a collaborative, multi-company rail initiative led by Cisco Systems.
Project SWIFT aims to provide high-speed in-carriage Wi-Fi during passenger rail services in order to improve train management and exploit commercial opportunities, as well as enhance overall customer experience.
The project offered an average on-board connection speed of 300Mbps during the trials.
Klas Telecom chief technology officer Frank Murray said: “Leveraging 300Mbps connections while on the move is difficult and requires high-performance hardware.
“We rely on and leverage the latest technology from industry-leading partners such as Cisco and Intel to provide the optimum passenger experience.”
Project SWIFT has selected Klas Telecom’s TRX R6 and TRX S10 as key components of the on-board passenger Wi-Fi system, which is expected to be connected to the new type of trackside fibre.
TRX R6 served as the modular, multi-modem on-board communications gateway and server during the Project SWIFT trials, offering high-bandwidth and low-latency connectivity to the train.
TRX S10 acted as the switching platform, providing connectivity to in-carriage access points and on-board train event recording devices.
The Wi-Fi system also included TRX’s SDWAN ‘KlasOS’ solution, which aggregated WAN links and managed several wireless bearers to ensure availability of the off-board WAN link and higher throughput.
