The Taiwanese city of Taoyuan has awarded a new metro rail contract to a consortium of South Korea’s train manufacturer Hyundai Rotem, local construction company BES Engineering and Siemens.
The contract, awarded by the Taoyuan City Government, involves the delivery of electrical and mechanical solutions for the Green Line metro.
Under the contract, Siemens will be responsible for providing its Trainguard MT Communications-Based Train Control system (CBTC), traction drives for the trains and the direct-current (DC) traction power supply.
The CBTC-based train control technology will help maximise throughput and capacity of the Taoyuan metro line, which is currently under construction.
Siemens Mobility Division CEO Michael Peter said: “Our CBTC train control system enables rail operators to optimally utilise their network capacity and throughputs.
“Headways of 90 seconds or less will be achieved with moving block operation that ensures safe separation of the trains, combined with continuous bidirectional radio communication.

Once completed, the 27.8km Green Line will feature nearly 12.5km of underground line and 15.3km of the elevated line connecting Taoyuan City with the upcoming Aerotropolis airport and the Taoyuan International Airport.
The Taoyuan metro line will comprise 21 stations. Two line extensions to Daxi with additional three stations and Chungli with seven stations are also being planned.
Department of Rapid Transit Systems director general Chen Wen De said: “The Green Line is the pioneer project of Taoyuan’s rail infrastructure. Construction of its elevated section will start in October this year.”
