Harsco Rail has secured a contract from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to build 65 flat cars for New York City Transit’s subway in the US.

The seven-year deal is valued at around $40m.

Harsco Rail is expected to start construction immediately for the first flat car and is scheduled to carry out the first delivery by July next year.

Following delivery of the first car, Harsco Rail is expected to deliver two cars a month until 2021.

The cars will be deployed to improve subway performance and passenger ride quality of the New York City subway system, which is currently being constructed.

Harsco Rail president Jeswant Gill said: “New York’s subway system has more stations than any transit system in the world, and provides more than one billion rides per year.”

In September last year, Harsco Rail secured two orders totalling around $25m to deliver precision rail grinding equipment and two on-track measuring vehicles in Saudi Arabia and South Africa respectively.

Precision rail grinding equipment will be used on the double-tracked 453km high-speed line between Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, while the on-track measuring vehicles will be deployed for evaluation of rail geometry and ballast profiling in South Africa.

Harsco Rail provides engineering, technology, dedicated parts and services, contracting services and maintenance from facilities in the US, UK, Germany, India, Brazil, China, and Australia.
