The Vegan Society has announced that seven UK-based train companies now offer vegan food options on-board, compared to just two companies earlier this year.

Virgin Trains, East Midlands Trains, Greater Anglia, Grand Central, Crosscountry, Great Western Railway and Hull Trains have been providing vegan food options since the launch of the ‘Vegan on the Go’ campaign.

At the beginning of this year, the Vegan Society requested that train companies introduced plant-based food options on trains. The increase from two to seven companies catering for vegans over the course of this year was primarily attributed to this campaign.

The Vegan Society communications and campaigns officer Elena Orde said: “We are very pleased to see so many train companies make positive changes to their vegan food and drink offering.

“Vegans need to be catered for, and those who fail to recognise this risk missing out on a growing segment of the market.”

“These businesses are showing the way the market is going, vegans need to be catered for, and those who fail to recognise this risk missing out on a growing segment of the market.

“Vegan food options are inclusive of most dietary requirements and often promote sustainability. We’re looking forward to working with more businesses on this.”

Currently, The Vegan Society aims to introduce vegan food onto five additional train operating services in the UK, as well as work to improve the plant-based menus.

The society noted that many companies have improved their vegan offerings to passengers and have included sandwiches, hot meals, cakes and plant-based milk for use in tea and coffee.

Greater Anglia media officer Lucy Wright said: “Vegan options are great because not only do they cater for the vegan community, but they are loved by everyone, from those looking to try something new and different, to those who care about the environment.”

Next year, The Vegan Society aims to increase plant-based food availability on planes.
