US-based passenger railroad service Amtrak has completed the refurbishment of the interiors for its Acela Express fleet.
The project, which lasted 15 months, redesigned all 20 trainsets, including 100 Amtrak cars and 6,080 total seats.
The scope of works included deep cleaning each rail cars, providing business-class and first-class seats with new cushions and replacing carpet for the aisle runner.
Overall, the railway company invested more than $4m to complete the project.
The refurbishment was a part of Amtrak’s larger programme to offer a more modern and comfortable travel experience for passengers.
Amtrak president and CEO Richard Anderson said: “Customers expect a premium experience when they board an Acela, and these updated interiors provide a more comfortable, refreshed look and feel, whether you want to relax, move about freely, work or play.”

By GlobalDataThe redesigning of the Acela fleet was carried out ahead of the introduction of new Acela trainsets.
The first trainset is expected to go for testing this year and will start commercial services in 2021.
These vehicles will have more passenger seats and offer better amenities to enhance passengers’ experience.
The current train fleet will be retired in early 2022. The Acela trains operate along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington.
Last month, Amtrak agreed with NJ Transit to make a joint investment of $31m to refurbish railroad infrastructure along the NEC. The investment will be used for works at Newark Penn Station and railway track upgrades.
