Siemens Mobility has secured two contracts to deliver S700 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) to Portland’s TriMet in Oregon and San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS).
Under the first contract with TriMet, Siemens will supply 26 LRVs that will replace the existing Type-1 vehicles.
The overall contract includes the option to deliver up to 60 additional LRVs. Additional S700s will enable TriMet to expand services, including the MAX Red Line Extension to Fair Complex, as well as the Southwest Corridor.
Additionally, the new LRV fleet will be equipped with the latest internet of things (IoT) technology to enable TriMet to leverage the latest rail digitalisation capabilities and improve operational efficiency.
TriMet general manager Doug Kelsey said: “Retiring our older rail vehicles with stairs and replacing them with these new vehicles will mean the entire MAX light-rail fleet will be all low-floor, better meeting ADA standards and creating a better experience for all riders, no matter their physical abilities.”
The second contract with San Diego’s MTS encompasses the supply of 25 S700 LRVs, which will replace the existing high-floor SD100 vehicles.

By GlobalDataOnce delivered, these vehicles will run across the entire 53-mile double-tracked MTS light-rail network. MTS will also operate the S700s on the 11-mile Mid-Coast Trolley extension, which is scheduled to open in 2021.
MTS CEO Paul Jablonski said: “The standards and expectations for public transit continue to change and we are committed to meeting the needs of our current and future riders.
“MTS operates one of the most efficient and reliable light-rail systems in the US and a large part of our success is due to our long-standing working relationship with Siemens to provide best-of-class vehicles.”
Siemens is expected to commence deliveries for both orders from 2021.
The S700 LRVs are an upgraded version of its S70 low-floor vehicle platform, which is designed and manufactured at its Sacramento facility in California.
They feature spacious low-floor interiors to improve passenger convenience and energy efficiency features such as LED lighting.
Earlier this month, Siemens received €200m contract to deliver 73 Avenio trams to SWM, a public service provider in Munich, Germany.
