Australia’s Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) has commenced the tender process for the construction of metro railway tunnels spanning across 50km.
The tunnels will serve the Sydney Metro West project, between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
The NSW government has initiated the expressions of interest (EoI) for the first two major infrastructure packages to build twin tunnels between Westmead and The Bays.
The first two tunnelling contracts are from Sydney Olympic Park to The Bays and from Westmead to Sydney Olympic Park.
Transport minister Andrew Constance said: “Now more than ever, infrastructure projects like Sydney Metro West support jobs, communities and the economy – Sydney Metro West will create more than 10,000 direct new jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs, with thousands of these jobs being generated by these new tunnelling contracts.
“These contracts will require tunnellers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, concrete workers, truck drivers, labourers and security guards.”

Constance added: “Sydney Metro West is a truly once-in-a-century city-shaping project that will forever change how we get around Sydney.
“Just as importantly, the construction of this megaproject will create many thousands of new jobs and support families across Sydney.”
Last year, the NSW government confirmed A$6.4bn ($4.4bn) in funding for the Sydney Metro West project, as part of its 2019 to 2020 state budget.
The Sydney Metro West project will be a driverless underground metro line connecting the Parramatta and Sydney central business districts.
Once complete, the metro line will connect key regions of Greater Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, The Bays Precinct and the Sydney CBD.
