Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced that work on the Sydney Metro West project has officially commenced.
This comes a day after the state government committed a record A$14bn ($10.25bn) to transform the city’s transport infrastructure.
The Sydney Metro West project involves the construction of an underground railway to connect Greater Parramatta with the Sydney CBD.
The work began at the Bays Station site, which is currently being prepared for the arrival of tunnel boring machines.
During the construction period, the Sydney Metro West project is expected to create around 10,000 direct jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs boosting the local economy.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “Sydney Metro West is a life-changing megaproject, which will transform how we get around Sydney and ensure we have the right transport in place to accommodate the city’s growth.
