Amtrak undertook a number of projects during the research period to reduce its environmental impact and upgrade its rail fleets and infrastructure.
In one example the company unveiled plans to reduce 40% of greenhouse gas emissions by converting all electricity to carbon-free sources by 2030.
As part of this it aims to replace its legacy train fleet with ALC-42 locomotives. Developed by a team from Amtrak and Siemens Mobility, the ALC-42 series is claimed to minimize emissions of nitrogen oxide by over 89% and particulate matter by 95%.
In a similar move the company also unveiled a new train, known as Amtrak Airo, which will begin operations in 2026. The trains will operate at speeds of up to 125mph, and generate 90% less particulate emissions in diesel operations.
Amtrak is also investing around $130m in rail improvement projects between Washington DC and New York in a bid to enhance railroad operations. Upon completion, the projects are expected to cut down lengthy train delays as well as enhance ride quality for customers.
Finally the company has also begun replacing railcars on 14 overnight routes with new train cars.
