SNCF awards €3.75bn contract for renewal of trains on Île-de-France network
French railway company SNCF awarded a €3.75bn contract to the Alstom-Bombardier consortium for the renewal of trains on lines D and E of the Île-de-France network.
The contract has been awarded for a total of 255 X’Trapolis Cityduplex trains (130 for the RER D and 125 for the RER E).
Each train will have the capacity to transport up to 1,860 passengers in its 130m version.
GMXT to gain Florida East Coast Railway for $2.1bn
Grupo México’s transportation business unit GMéxico Transportes (GMXT) signed a $2.1bn agreement to acquire Florida East Coast Railway (FEC).
Set to position GMXT as a railroad owner in the US, the acquisition will also add a key Florida rail line to the company’s existing operations in Texas.
GMXT president and CEO Alfredo Casar said: “The acquisition of FEC is an important strategic addition to our North American transportation service offering.

Bombardier to supply Innovia trains for Malaysia’s Kelana Jaya LRT Line
Bombardier Transportation and its local partner Hartasuma are set to deliver an additional 27 Innovia Metro 300 trains for the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The $388m order for Prasarana Malaysia Berhad is expected to be complete in 2022.
Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions and South East Asia president Peter Cedervall said: “We are very pleased to receive, together with Hartasuma, this further order that comes in addition to our ongoing delivery of 14 new trains previously ordered and refurbishment of the original fleet.
“All of these projects will significantly increase capacity on the Kelana Jaya line and improve connectivity across the fast-growing Greater Kuala Lumpur area.”
Canada to invest $1.35bn in GO Transit Regional Express rail project
The Government of Canada is set to invest more than C$1.8bn ($1.35bn) in the GO Transit Regional Express rail project, which is being developed in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area.
The investment is planned to be offered through the New Building Canada Fund and will support a modern transit system. The new project is expected to provide faster commutes, which will help passengers to spend less time in traffic.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: “More families are choosing to settle in communities like Etobicoke, communities that allow parents to work in the big city, and allow kids to ride their bikes on the street.
“These communities are growing at a rapid rate, and investment in public transit needs to keep pace.
“That is why we’re investing in the GO rail network and over 300 additional projects in Ontario to reduce commute times, decrease air pollution, and improve the lives of millions of Ontarians.”
Rolls-Royce to supply MTU Series rail engines for CRRC locomotives
Rolls-Royce won a contract to supply MTU Series 4000 rail engines to China Railway Rolling Stock (CRRC).
The deal saw Rolls-Royce begin delivery of 15 20V 4000 R43 engines in July, which are to be installed on-board 15 DL class freight locomotives for rail operator Kiwi Rail.
The agreement represents the fourth time Kiwi Rail has selected CRRC locomotives powered by MTU engines since 2009.
GE signs $575m deal to supply 100 locomotives to Egyptian railways
GE signed a letter of intent (LoI) worth $575m with the Ministry of Transportation (MoT) and Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to supply 100 GE ES30ACi Light Passenger Evolution Series Locomotives.
The trains can be used for both passenger and freight rail, and are equipped with 12-cylinder, 3,200 horsepower GE Evolution Series engines.
They also provide high-power output to offer better productivity, as well as flexibility in heavy-haul operations.
The parties have also signed a 15-year agreement for parts and technical support for GE locomotives in ENR’s new and existing fleet.
Fluor-led JV begins construction on $5.6bn Purple Line project in US
A Fluor-led joint venture (JV) team started construction of the $5.6bn Purple Line Light Rail project in Maryland, US.
The Purple Line Transit Partners JV team consists of Fluor, Meridiam Infrastructure Purple Line and Star America Purple Line.
The construction project is being carried out on behalf of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), and began with a groundbreaking ceremony.
HTT signs deal to introduce India’s first hyperloop transportation system
US-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) in India to facilitate the development of a hyperloop route from Amravati to Vijayawada.
The project is expected to reduce the journey time between the two cities from more than an hour to just six minutes.
HTT’s Hyperloop Transportation System will be developed under a public private partnership that will create roughly 2,500 new jobs.
Ballard and Siemens partner for zero-emission rail fuel cell engine
Ballard Power Systems signed an agreement to develop a zero-emission fuel cell engine for Siemens’ Mireo light rail train.
The arrangement will see Ballard develop a 200kW fuel cell engine for installation on-board Siemens’ new Mireo vehicle, which is a modular commuter train platform designed to operate at a maximum speed of 160km/h.
The new train is also equipped with energy-efficient components and intelligent onboard network management systems.
Alstom delivers first Citadis tram to Dublin
Rolling stock manufacturer Alstom delivered the first Citadis tram to Dublin from its La Rochelle facility in France as part of a €35m contract with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
The company is set to deliver a total of seven 55m-long trams, which will operate along the extension of the Dublin tram network under the LUAS Cross City transport project.
