PHAR Philippines to install Metro Manila passenger information system
PHAR Philippines and Trackmate Business Solutions reportedly partnered to deploy a passenger information system on Metro Manila trains.
Both partners will install approximately 1,000 GPS-triggered real-time passenger information systems.

The system, which will be called Tube, will feature on Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, as well as Metro Rail Transit Line 3.
Alstom to deliver CBTC technology for Indian Metro
French rail firm Alstom won contracts worth over $101.1m (€90m) to supply communication-based train control technology to India for three upcoming lines in Mumbai and two upcoming lines in Pune.
The rail technology company will install its communications-based train control (CBTC) technology Urbalis 400 on Mumbai Metro lines 2A, 2B and 7, along with Pune Metro lines 1 and 2.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) awarded the Mumbai Metro contract, which requires Alstom to supply the CBTC signalling system along with modern telecommunication systems for the three elevated lines.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn began exploring options to sell its UK-based wholly-owned subsidiary Arriva.
Headquartered in Sunderland, Arriva operates bus and rail services in Europe. It was acquired by Deutsche Bahn for £1.59bn in 2010.
The divestment will enable Deutsche Bahn to reduce its debt while also giving Arriva monetary resources to expand its operations.
Network Rail to invest £42bn in infrastructure to boost performance
The UK’s Network Rail unveiled plans to invest more than £42bn to upgrade trains, tracks and stations to boost reliability and improve rail performance.
Network Rail will work closely with train operating companies and make investments in the areas that matter most to passengers and freight users.
Network Rail said that the funding will be provided over five years. Control period 6 (CP6) began on 1 April and will continue until 2024.
Capita Travel & Events and Seatfrog to allow first class upgrades
Capita Travel and Events teamed up with Australian travel technology firm Seatfrog to allow train passengers to upgrade to first class on certain London North Eastern Railway (LNER) routes.
Passengers who book standard advance tickets through Capita Travel and Events can bid for first class upgrades through the Seatfrog app.
Seatfrog can be downloaded from app stores on both iOS and Android devices. Passengers will need to enter their trip details to view available upgrades before placing a bid.
EU sanctions $315m to modernise and construct Polish railway stations
The European Union (EU) approved a loan worth approximately $315m for the Polish Government to renovate and construct 55 railway stations.
The fund will also be utilised for the construction of the Bolków bypass located in south-western Poland.
A total of eight co-financing contracts were signed by the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CEUTP) with Poland’s national railway operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP) and the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways.
Eurostar deploys DELMIA Quintiq to boost operational efficiency
British high-speed rail operator Eurostar will deploy Dassault Systèmes’ DELMIA Quintiq applications to increase train frequency and provide improved travel experience to passengers.
Powered by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the DELMIA Quintiq applications will also help the rail operator to optimise its resource and maintenance planning.
Eurostar, whose high-speed trains connect London, Paris, Brussels, Rotterdam and Amsterdam through the Channel Tunnel, transported 10.3 million passengers in 2017.
Govia Thameslink Railway to acquire 150 carriages for £240m
UK-based train operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) signed contracts with Siemens to acquire 150 carriages for £240m as part of a plan to replace its ageing fleet of electric trains.
Under the terms of the contract, the company will buy 25 Siemens Class 717 trains with six carriages and 362 seats.
These trains will operate on the Great Northern routes between Moorgate and Hertfordshire, to and from Stevenage, Hertford North and Welwyn Garden City.
Canadian National Railway to upgrade Manitoba’s rail infrastructure
Canadian National Railway (CN) announced plans to spend C$120m ($89.59m) to boost and expand its rail network across Manitoba province this year.
It is part of CN’s C$3.9bn ($2.91bn) total investment in 2019, aimed at boosting growth from all commodity segments, including grain, agricultural, forest, consumer goods and energy products.
The operator plans to spend C$7.4bn ($5.52bn) over the next two years on various programmes.
Network Rail completes upgrades near Peterborough station in the UK
The UK’s Network Rail concluded a project that will enable trains to travel into Peterborough station at higher speeds.
The completion of the £10m project will allow faster and more frequent train services on the East Coast Main Line in the future.
Network Rail replaced two sets of switches and crossings, the specialist equipment that enables trains to move from one track to another, at Fletton Junction.
