Rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has delivered the first Citadis tram to Dublin from its La Rochelle facility in France as part of a €35m contract with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

The company is set to deliver a total of seven 55m-long trams, which will operate along the extension of the Dublin tram network under the LUAS Cross City transport project.

Alstom UK&I Customer and Operations director Nick Phillips said: “It is another important milestone in our long and successful partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

"We look forward to starting work on the final assembly and testing so that passengers in Dublin can enjoy these trams."

“Dublin was amongst the first cities in the world to order our first tram in the Citadis range 15 years ago, and will now be the very first to try our longest model.

“We look forward to starting work on the final assembly and testing so that passengers in Dublin can enjoy these trams.”

The seven vehicles are to be assembled at Alstom’s site in Sandyford once they are delivered from the French facility, followed by safety testing and commissioning works.

The Citadis trams are capable of carrying up to 344 passengers and are scheduled to begin commercial operations from February next year.

In addition, the vehicles have been designed to fulfil all necessary urban requirements, including the modernisation of existing tram networks or the introduction of new services.

The vehicles are up to 98% recyclable and can be equipped with multiple electric power systems.

Dublin’s Citadis fleet will comprise a total of 73 trams following the successful delivery of all seven vehicles.

Alstom has sold around 2,500 Citadis trams to date, including 1,900 vehicles that are currently in revenue service.
