US-based passenger railroad service Amtrak has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select a general contractor to upgrade Claytor Concourse at Washington Union Station.

The project is part of the larger Washington Union Station upgrade programme to enhance customer experience.

Union Station’s intercity passenger and commuter rail pathway, Claytor Concourse, was built in the 1980s.

It includes waiting areas for Amtrak customers and other customer amenities including retail and food establishments. Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and Maryland Area Regional Commuter Rail passengers also use the Claytor Concourse.

Amtrak aims to double the capacity of the concourse to reduce passenger congestion, as well improve customer comfort and accessibility. The project works will also help in enhancing connectivity with the commuter rail and bus transportation.

The works will include construction of additional restrooms and the development of a new lounge space.

Furthermore, space will be created for support staff such as station managers and customer service representatives.

Construction works are expected to begin this year and are due to be completed in 2022.

Amtrak is currently working with multiple stakeholders including the US Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Union Station Redevelopment Corporation and other transit partners for the project.

Last month, Amtrak received a $19m grant from the FRA to support a major construction project at Washington Union Station.

The grant will be used to fund construction works to increase track capacity for revenue trains for Amtrak and VRE.

Recently, Amtrak awarded an $850m contract to procure 75 Tier 4 locomotives from Siemens Mobility to replace its long-distance railway fleet.
