Indian public sector undertaking BEML has secured a Rs30.15bn ($427.33m) contract to deliver railcars for the Mumbai Metro Corridor in the state of Maharashtra.
The contract was awarded to BEML after it emerged as the lowest bidder among seven companies.
BEML will supply 378 metro cars configured into 63 trains of six cars each, for Mumbai Metro Corridor 2A, 2B and 7.
Driverless trains will be manufactured at the company’s factory in Bengaluru. They will operate on 25kV AC traction.
All units will feature a stainless steel body with four doors on each side, regenerative braking systems and CCTV surveillance to ensure passenger security and real-time track monitoring.
The trains will be fully air-conditioned and each coach will be capable of carrying up to 300 passengers.

Besides BEML, international companies including Alstom, Bombardier, CAF, CRRC, Titagarh and Hyundai Rotem participated in the bidding process.
BEML previously supplied metro coaches in a joint venture with a foreign rolling stock manufacturer. The company has now partnered with Hitachi for designs.
The overall project is supported by the Asian Development Bank.
In Mumbai, Metro line 2A will connect Dahisar to DN Nagar, while Metro line 2B will run between DN Nagar and Mankhurd via Bandra. The Metro line 7 will run from Dahisar to Andheri (east).
Earlier this month, Indian Railways announced an investment of Rs650bn ($8.9bn) in the Mumbai suburban rail network.
Funding will be used to upgrade existing facilities to improve operations.
