Swiss rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler has been commissioned by Germany-based public transport operator BOGESTRA to build six city-rail vehicles and modernise existing 25 B80D trains.
The three-part bidirectional vehicles will commence operations on the U35 route from 2021.

Called TANGOs, the high floor rail units can accommodate up to 172 passengers, of which 66 can sit.
These vehicles will have a stepless accessible length of 28m and feature four wide doors on each side to enable smooth entry and exit.
Spacious and barrier-free passenger areas will have wide gangways and an open design.
Specifically marked multifunctional areas will enable the transportation of pushchairs and bicycles. Two areas will be optimised for wheelchair users.

By GlobalDataThe passenger information system and WLAN technology will enable accurate minute-by-minute updating of individual travel schedules.
The trains will feature modern wide-screen TFT displays to offer information about the terminal stop, line number and route.
BOGESTRA board member Andreas Kerber said: “The TANGO rail vehicles of the 2nd generation are equipped with WLAN and, for the first time, also with USB slots, so that the almost 94,000 customers that use the underground trains during the week can surf free-of-charge at a download speed of up to 100MBit per second and a data volume of up to 5 gigabytes.”
Once the new vehicles become operational, the 25 city-rail vehicles will be modernised from spring 2021.
Some of these vehicles are three decades old. As part of the revamp programme, the trains will be given an extensive overhaul. The carriages will be repainted, passenger areas will be refurbished and the driver’s cab will be redesigned.
The trains will be equipped with modern passenger door systems.
Stadler Pankow head of LRV sales Patrick Sefzik said: “The order for the additional TANGO city railways increases the number of BOGESTRA’s city rail and tram vehicles made by Stadler to 99. Our trams have been used for more than 10 years in Herne, Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. We are delighted to have signed this contract because it allows us to continue with our successful working relationship also in the field of modernisation.”
