A consortium led by Bombardier Transportation has signed an agreement with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels to design and build two monorail lines in Cairo.
The other members of the consortium are local companies Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors.

The consortium will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the two lines for 30 years.
Overall, the contract values more than $4.5bn, with Bombardier Transportation’s share amounting to $2.85bn.
The agreement is subject to final signing of supplementary documents.
In May, the consortium was named as the preferred bidder for the project, which will enable fast, sustainable and comfortable transportation in the Cairo metropolitan area.

By GlobalDataThe first monorail line will stretch 54km from East Cairo to the New Administrative Capital, while the 42km-long second line will run between 6th October City and Giza.
At peak capacity, the two lines will be able to transport around 45,000 passengers every hour in each direction.
As a part of the contract, Orascom Construction will design and carry out all infrastructure and civil works of the two lines, which includes building stations, guideway structures and new depots.
Bombardier will deliver and install the electrical and mechanical (E&M) equipment for the two lines. It will also supply 70 four-car Bombardier INNOVIA Monorail 300 trains (280 cars), as well as CITYFLO 650 signalling and automatic train control technology.
Additionally, the company will be responsible for the operation control centre, communication systems, platform screen doors and fare collection, power supply/power distribution systems, switch beams and depot equipment among others.
Bombardier will also ensure overall electrical and mechanical system integration, as well as oversee project management, systems engineering and integration. Once delivered, it will test and commission the train systems, signalling and wayside systems.
