Transport for London (TfL) has awarded a contract to Bombardier Transportation to supply five additional Aventra trains for the Elizabeth line in the UK capital.
The contract values nearly £73m and increases the total order to 70 units.
TfL London Underground and Elizabeth line managing director Mark Wild said: “The opening of the Elizabeth line in December will redefine transport in London with journeys made easier and trains passing through brand new tunnels beneath central London to new, accessible stations.
“The additional trains will allow us to serve all the terminals at Heathrow and provide an increased frequency when the line is fully open in December 2019.”
The additional trains will each comprise nine cars and will be capable of carrying up to 1,500 passengers.
Designed to be energy-efficient, these air-conditioned trains are equipped with Bombardier ORBITA predictive maintenance capabilities and the company’s Automated Vehicle Inspection System.

Bombardier Transportation UK managing director Richard Hunter said: “The Elizabeth line is set to transform transport in London with quicker, easier and more accessible journeys, and we are proud to be playing our part.”
Scheduled to enter service by the end of next year, these new vehicles will be added to the total of 585 cars currently under production at Bombardier’s facility in Derby.
The construction of the Elizabeth line is in the final stages. After commencement of operations, the line is estimated to carry more than 200 million passengers per year.
