The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) in the US has commenced the construction of a station that will serve the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) Green Line at Damen Avenue and Lake Street.
Construction activities started with a ground-breaking ceremony, which was attended by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other officials of the CTA and the CDOT.
The $60m Damen station will be the fourth CTA station to be added or constructed since 2011. It will be completely ADA-accessible, serving the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, the United Center and surrounding residential areas.
The ongoing work will form the foundation of the station. Construction for the main station house is slated to begin later this year and will complete in 2021.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said: “Today’s ground-breaking marks another major milestone for the CTA, which brings new jobs and opportunities for Chicago’s residents.
“This new station will be a community anchor, serve those who live and work in the neighbourhood and will become a gateway to further usher in economic growth for the Near West Side.”

By GlobalDataChicago-based architecture firm Perkins Will designed the Damen station. The station will exhibit a transparent glass façade with a glass bridge to connect between inbound and outbound train platforms.
CDOT commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said: “This new state-of-the art, multi-modal station features a modern, light-filled design.
“The station’s location will allow users to seamlessly connect with CTA buses, or to use bike share or walk to nearby destinations.”
Earlier, similar stations were built at Morgan and Cermak-McCormick Place to reduce the distance between existing stations. Since 2011, more than 40 CTA stations have been refurbished.
