Construction work on the North Melbourne station in the Australian province of Victoria has started.

Initially, workers began preparations to build the underground walls, which will be up to 30m deep, and enable safe excavation of 330,000 tonnes of rock and soil.

The new North Melbourne Station will be built within the excavated space and will feature platforms more than 225m-long.

Above the ground, the station will feature a plaza with entry gates at Laurens and Barwise streets.

Around 300 workers will be involved in building the station and it is scheduled to be ready for the Metro Tunnel to open in 2025.

The new station is also expected to transform the region and create more than 43,000 jobs over the next 30 years.

In the following weeks, construction of new underground stations at Parkville, Anzac and two CBD locations will be ramped up.

The construction of a new manufacturing facility in the west of Melbourne will also be expedited.

This facility will provide more than 50,000 concrete segments to line the project’s twin 9km-long tunnels.
