Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has awarded a contract to Bombardier Transportation UK and Kiepe Electric to deliver 27 new trams for its Metrolink network.
The £72m deal is expected to increase Metrolink’s capacity by 15%.
The delivery of the first tram is scheduled to take place in February 2020, while the remaining units will be delivered on a monthly basis until June 2021.
Once delivered, the trams will offer 4,800 additional spaces and will be used to run more ‘double’ trams on the busiest lines.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said: “Greater Manchester is growing. That means more jobs, more people and more demand on our public transport networks and these new trams will be a very welcome – and much needed – addition to the Metrolink fleet.
“By significantly enhancing capacity we will enable more people to leave their cars at home and use Metrolink to commute to their jobs, access essential services and explore our amazing city-region. That means less congestion on our roads, less pollution in our air and a better quality of life for everyone.”

By GlobalDataMetrolink’s new trams will be designed to carry 206 people at a maximum speed of 50mph and will feature the same M5000 model as the existing fleet.
They will receive funding from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, which intends to boost productivity by investing in public and sustainable transport in England’s largest city-regions.
The trams will be procured as part of the Congestion Deal, the city-region’s approach to handling congestion by improving public transport and providing an alternative to driving.
