Network Rail has completed a replacement footbridge at Addiewell train station, West Lothian, Scotland, connecting the two platforms.
The newly opened bridge is 11.7m-long and 5.6m above the rails to deliver the clearance for running wires to allow safe electrification of the line.
Constructed by Bam Nuttal on behalf of Network Rail, the new bridge is next to the old one. The bridge’s development work was carried out from a purpose-built site established adjacent to the station car park in June 2017.
Completed over eight months, the project is part of wider work on the Shotts line being delivered by Network Rail ahead of the electrification of the route next year.
Network Rail infrastructure projects route delivery director Kevin McClelland said: “We are reaching the end of route clearance activities on the project where we have cleared structures on the route from being an obstruction to the safe running of the overhead wires which enable electrification.
“This new footbridge at Addiewell will enhance the amenity of the station and the design offers the potential to install lifts in the future to deliver full accessibility.”

By GlobalDataFurthermore, construction of the footbridge represents Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan for the UK.
The plan consists of two-thirds of Network Rail’s £40bn spending priorities for the five years and is expected to offer more capacity, relieve crowding and meet the growth of the country’s railway lines.
