British train operating company Abellio Greater Anglia has invested in barcode readers at the ticket gates, eliminating the need for paper tickets.

Passengers travelling through the network can also use the operator’s mobile app to buy and receive up to eight tickets in one transaction on their smartphones. They will then be scanned at the ticket gates through recently implemented barcode readers.

As well as reduding paper-ticket use, the investment of over £3m will reduce long queues at ticket machines and gates.

"Passengers can use the operator’s mobile app to buy and receive up to eight tickets in one transaction on their smartphones."

Abellio Greater Anglia’s commercial director Andy Camp said: "We are very pleased to be one of the first operators to introduce mobile ticketing.

"Their introduction provides a wealth of benefits to passengers, and will make travelling simpler and more convenient, eliminating queues and paper tickets."

Passengers can purchase tickets including advanced-purchase and walk-up fares for any journey across Abellio Greater Anglia’s network. The new system will make it easier for travellers to purchase tickets on-the-go.
