A new low-floor tramway has been launched in Moscow, Russia, by TramRus, a joint venture between rail manufacturers Alstom and Transmashholding.
Developed on the basis of the Citadis platform, the new tramway is capable of running at speeds of up to 75km/h and will be operated on tram service 17 connecting Medvedkovo with VDNKh metro station in Moscow, Russia.
The tramway has been designed by applying modern engineering solutions, such as new low-floor bogies and modular design, which reduces maintenance and repair costs, as well as energy consumption by more than 10%.
The 25.5m-long tram can accommodate up to 255 people, which is almost twice the maximum capacity of the existing Moscow trams.
It also received a certificate of conformity under the road certification scheme.
The low-floor tram ran more than 2,000km during the tests organised from December 2013 to June this year.

By GlobalDataEarlier this month, Alstom and Huawei launched the first live testing of a long-term evolution (LTE) multi-services broadband radio network technology for the metro market.
Huawei will provide the LTE network and Alstom will provide the train and LTE-compliant onboard equipment. Testing will be carried out at Alstom’s Valenciennes site in France.
The system will provide metro operators with a single wireless infrastructure that offers mission-critical voice communication, secure train signalling and broadband data communication, such as live video streaming of surveillance cameras.
