Alstom has unveiled the design of the Citadis trams that will be operated on the East-West line and Line 3 of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropole in France.
The company has collaborated with French designer ORA ÏTO to personalise the Citadis X05 range for the city of Nice.
Between last November and this January, the inhabitants voted to select a design out of three propositions created and presented by the designer.
Inspired by the pigment of the building façades of Nice, it is reported that the ochre design was selected with a 44% majority of votes.
The new trains are part of a €91m contract Alstom secured from France’s Nice Côte D’Azur Metropolitan Council to deliver 19 Citadis X05 low-floor trams for the East-West line.
The contract also includes supply of energy-charging systems, maintenance for 12 years, and an option for up to 18 more trams.

By GlobalDataDesigned at Alstom’s site in Saint-Ouen and to be assembled in La Rochelle, the new trams will be delivered in middle of next year, with entry into service on the East-West Line scheduled between the end of 2018 and early 2019.
Capable of accommodating more than 300 people, the new 44m-long trams will be equipped with Alstom’s new SRS ground-based static charging system, which allows the tram to charge automatically in less than 20s at the stations.
According to Alstom, the new trams will offer a renewed passenger experience: greater comfort with 40% more windows compared with the previous generation in circulation on Metropole Line 1.
In the new Citadis X05, passenger capacity has been increased by 10%, the exchange ratio in the stations has been increased by 20%, preventive maintenance costs have been reduced by 20% and the length of life of the wheels has been increased.
The new trams will also help in preserving the environment as it is 98% recyclable, consumes 30% less energy and recuperates energy produced during braking.
Unlike Line 1, there is the notable difference of the lack of a catenary over the entire surface section of the route, with regular charging inside the station.
