Australian construction firm Built Pty has secured a contract from the government of Victoria to refurbish the historic Administration Building under the A$100m ($71m) Flinders Street Station restoration project.
Scheduled to begin in the next few weeks, the work will include fixing the roof, restoring the crumbling façade and re-painting the building, which is more than 100 years old.
In order to improve the station for passengers, the concourse will be extended along Swanston Street, with new entrances at the western end of the station near Elizabeth Street, and in the Degraves Subway.
Work will also include redesigning the main entrance on the corner of Swanston Street to make it easier to access, and revamping ticketing services across the station to allow people to get through the gates faster.
Victoria premier Daniel Andrews said: "Flinders Street is at the heart of our train system and our city.
"It is an icon of Melbourne and it is time to give it the attention it deserves.

The work will also include the installation of new information boards and signage, while the dirty walls will be re-tiled and repainted.
Approximately 150 jobs will be created under the project and work on passenger improvements will begin in the middle of this year. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2018.
Victoria minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: "The new entrances, ticketing and passenger information will make it easier to get in and out of the busy station, and get to the right platform at the right time, to get the train.
"We are fixing the leaky roof, restoring the crumbling walls and giving the station a new lick of paint to return this grand old dame to its former glory, and make it a place passengers, visitors and everyone in Melbourne can be proud of once again."
