Bechtel‘s Dulles Transit Partners has completed phase 1 of the $1.2bn Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, which is also known as Silver Line.
A consortium led by Bechtel has constructed the 11.7-mile rail line connecting the Washington region’s existing metro system for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Bechtel project executive director Larry Melton said: "Substantial completion is an important milestone that signals major work is finished and that soon riders will travel on a 21st-century transit system.
"This achievement is remarkable given the complexity of building a rail line in a densely populated area where 700,000 cars travel each day."
Phase 1 of the project includes five stations, a six-mile elevated track that will carry Metrorail trains at heights up to 65ft above the Capital Beltway and over Tysons Corner, and a tunnel across the busiest retail areas in the country.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will conduct the final testing before the commencement of passenger service on the line.
