Crossrail has manufactured the last of its 250,000 concrete segments, which will be used to line the 12km-long eastern twin tunnels connecting east London and Farringdon.
The final piece was manufactured at Crossrail factory in Chatham, Kent, UK, and is a part of 110,000 tunnel segments that will be used for the twin tunnels.
Crossrail’s Chatham factory has manufactured approximately 330 segments a day and supports 120 local jobs.
Crossrail chief executive Andrew Wolstenholme said: "Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project with an immense supply chain spread across the country. The team at Chatham has done a superb job supplying our eastern tunnels with concrete segments."
Brett Concrete has supplied 140,000m3 of concrete for the segments and Medway Ports facilitated 260 river barge movements from Chatham to Limmo Peninsula, near Canning Town, where segments feed Crossrail’s 1,000t tunnel boring machines.
Seven 3.4t segments and a key stone form a complete tunnel ring in the new Crossrail eastern tunnels, which are being built by joint venture Dragados Sisk.
