Stadler Rail Services has awarded a £20m contract to UK-based civil engineering company BAM Nuttall for construction of a train depot in Kirkdale, Liverpool.
The contract includes development of a depot with washing and stabling facilities, maintenance shed with run-through tracks, office space, and a simulator suite.
The contract also includes refurbishment of an existing depot in Birkenhead North with a new washing facility.
Monash University’s Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) in Australia and the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) are partnering to set-up a new rail research and development institute in India.
The partnership has selected a group of suppliers that includes IRT, Balaji Railroad Systems (BARSYL), PwC and the Indian Institute of Bombay (IITB), which will provide guidance in establishing the new institute.
Named the Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology & Holistic Advancement (Srestha), it will guide Indian Railways on international rail models for adaption to the country’s environment.

By GlobalDataHector Rail has placed a second order with Siemens for 15 Vectron alternating-current (AC) locomotives, to be used for heavy freight and timber transport in Sweden and Norway.
Locomotives will be equipped with the European train control system (ETCS) and the ATC2-STM controls and have a maximum output of 6,400kW and a top speed of 200km/h. They will feature a diesel power module and radio remote control on-board to bridge short stretches without overhead power lines.
