SMRT Trains has secured a S$1.7bn ($1.26bn) contract from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to operate the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) in Singapore for an initial period of nine years starting from 2019.
As part of the agreement, SMRT Trains will offer services to the 43km TEL, including 31 new stations, as well as seven interchange stations to be connected to the five existing Mass Rapid Transit lines, upon resuming full operations in 2024.
Siemens has been contracted to supply 30 Vectron trains to Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE), a subsidiary of Japan-based firm Mitsui & Co.
Siemens will supply ten multisystem Vectron MS locomotives, which will be put into the cross-border operations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and the Netherlands. The remaining 20 locomotives will be delivered to be operated as direct-current trains in Italy.
Deliveries of the locomotives are scheduled to start in January 2018. The contract also includes an option to deliver an additional 20 units.
Vectron locomotives are equipped with the European Train Control System and can operate at a maximum speed of 160km/h.

By GlobalDataCowi and Multiconsult joint venture has been awarded a contract to design the Fornebu Line, an 8.5km extension of the Oslo metro that will connect the Fornebu peninsula to the Norwegian capital.
The metro extension will run underground from Oslo’s transport hub, Majorstuen, west to Fornebu. It will feature six new stations and an underground maintenance centre at Fornebu.
Construction of the metro extension line is expected to begin in 2021 and scheduled to be complete by 2025.
Strukton Rail has been awarded a contract renewal worth €74m ($32.15m) by Trafikverket for the daily maintenance of Svealandsbanan running between Södertälje and Valskog.
Strukton Rail will maintain and inspect rails, electrical installations and signals all along the Svealand Railway, which has 138 switches and 196km of rail with associated technology as part of the contract.
Strukton Rail will also be responsible for clearing snow and ice from rails, switches and train stations, and grit platforms to ensure passenger safety during winter, starting from October 2018 until September 2023.
