The Government of Victoria in Australia plans to partner with mobile carriers Telstra, Optus and Vodafone for a rail connectivity project that aims to improve mobile coverage and connectivity for passengers.
The partners will fix mobile blackspots across five busy rail corridors in the region, including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon and Seymour, which carry approximately 15.5 million passengers a year.
Plans outlined for the project include the installation of in-train mobile signal boosting technology systems, which will facilitate better coverage from mobile towers outside the rail carriage.
US-based construction company Bechtel has won a deal to deliver the HS2 Phase IIb project, which is set to run between Crewe and Manchester, and between the West Midlands and Leeds via Sheffield.
HS2 will provide rail links between eight major cities in the UK once completed.
The £170m ($217m) contract was awarded to Bechtel following the withdrawal of the project's original contractor, CH2M.
