Full-service provider European Locomotive Leasing (ELL) has signed a framework agreement with Siemens for an addition of 50 Vectron locomotives.
The current contract supplements the first framework agreement signed between the two companies in 2014, which also included the supply of 50 locomotives by Siemens. This new deal states the first locomotives have already been ordered, with delivery expected to commence in Q2 of this year.
ELL’s CEO and founder Christoph Katzensteiner said: "We are providing greater value for our customers by making available state-of-the-art alternating-current (AC) and multisystem locomotives, which ensure the highest reliability.
"With this order for an additional 50 locomotives, we will also be able to support our customers’ growth in new national markets."
The Vectron trains will be used by ELL for both freight and passenger services. The vehicles are designed for cross-border operation and will run between Romania and the Netherlands, the Netherlands along the western corridor to Italy, and from Germany to Romania through Austria and Hungary, as well as within Germany, Austria, and Hungary.
In addition, the new framework contract will allow ELL to order locomotives for the corridor to Scandinavia.

By GlobalDataSiemens’ rail business head Jochen Eickholt said: "This renewed framework agreement with ELL shows that our Vectron locomotives have been convincing performers.
"The flexibility of our locomotive platform enables ELL to order tailored variants for cross-border service in Europe."
The trains have a maximum output of 6,400KW and run at a top speed of 200km per hour. They will feature both the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the national train control systems.
