US-based infrastructure company Granite Construction has secured a new design-build light rail sub-contract for the Operations and Maintenance Facility East (OMF East) project in Bellevue, Washington.
The $28m contract was awarded by construction firm Hensel Phelps and will be included in Granite Construction’s third quarter backlog for 2017.

The project is being undertaken by transport operator Sound Transit and is expected to support the expansion of the region’s light rail system in the city of Bellevue.
It also forms part of the wider light rail improvement programme for Sound Transit’s expanding public transit network.
The site will serve as a fully functional light rail maintenance and operations facility for the storage and maintenance of 96 light rail vehicles upon completion.
Granite Construction will be responsible for carrying out site demolition, site grading, the installation of utilities, the development of a pedestrian trail and asphalt paving for the 28-acre facility as part of the initiative.

The system is expected to grow from its existing 20mi-long network to approximately 50mi by 2023, while the existing light rail fleet will more than triple in size from 62 to 214 vehicles.
Construction on the project is slated to begin late this year and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2020.
